Events Associated with the 2008 USTA Men's $50,000 Challenger of Lubbock

PRE-TOURNAMENT EVENTS

The Art of Tennis Contest – Let your creative side shine through and get ready to design an original Lubbock Challenger piece of art to submit into the annual Art of Tennis Contest. All ages can participate and the selected category winners (creativity, etc.) will receive 2 tickets to one session of his/her choice between Monday and Friday. The overall contest winner will receive 4 tickets of his/her choice between Monday and Friday. The only rule of the contest is that the artwork must have a tennis theme. Some ideas for tennis-themed artwork include decorating a racquet, ball, t-shirt, etc. Participants must include their name, age, address, day and night telephone numbers, along with a brief description of how and why his/her design was created. Artwork must be submitted by Sunday, September 14th. All items will be displayed at the McLeod Tennis Center during the tournament. When your artwork is complete, contact Amanda for pick-up/delivery.



TOURNAMENT EVENTS

  • Junior Clinic – We will be conducting a FREE junior clinic (anyone ages 5-18) on Sunday, September 21st from 2:30pm-4:00pm. The clinic will be hosted by tournament players, teaching professionals, collegiate players, and collegiate coaches. No reservations necessary.
  • USTA Member Appreciation Day – Tuesday, September 23rd is USTA Day. Present your current USTA membership card at the tournament entrance and receive a prize. USTA members can also enter a drawing for an additional USTA item.
  • Racquet Day – On Wednesday, September 24th an individual who donates a new or gently used racquet at the tournament entrance will receive one free ticket to the afternoon session that day. The racquets donated are used in many worthwhile junior tennis programs conducted by the USTA Texas Section, including the National Junior Tennis League and USTA Schools Program.
  • Ladies Day – Thursday, September 25th is Ladies Day. When ladies purchase a $5.00 day session ticket, they will be able to participate in a ladies clinic along with watching great tennis. The clinic, beginning at 10:00am, will be hosted by tournament players, teaching professionals, collegiate players, and collegiate coaches promoting the fun and fitness of tennis.   • Special Olympics Tennis Carnival – A FREE clinic for Special Olympic athletes will be hosted by tournament players and certified Special Olympic coaches on Friday, September 26th at 5:30pm.
  • Bring Your Team to the Matches – Teams are invited to attend the matches and watch the up-and-coming stars of the Men's Circuit. Pizza and drinks will be available. If you would like to bring your team to a match, please contact Amanda. REMEMBER: Your team can also be ball people for a day (see volunteer page for more information).
  • Junior High/High School Tennis Team Clinics – Tournament players will visit junior high and high schools and will conduct a clinic during tennis practice. If you are interested in having a Pro Circuit player conduct a clinic at your school, please contact Amanda. Times are based on availability of players and tournament staff.
  • Community Day (s) – Local elementary schools are invited to attend the tournament free of charge and to participate in an on-court clinic.  If you would like to bring your class/ your school, please contact Amanda.
  • Wheelchair Tennis – A wheelchair exhibition and a clinic for anyone interested in this sport will be conducted. The USTA Texas Section will provide 2 sport wheelchairs for use during the event. The clinic will be free of charge. Contact Amanda for details.

DAILY ACTIVITIES

  • QuickStart Tennis – A 36' court will be set-up on site for the entire tournament and information about QuickStart Tennis will be available.  Demonstrations will be held on the court during USTA Day. 
  • Ball Toss – Fans can buy tennis balls for $1 each and toss them from their seats into a ball hopper on Center Court to become an instant winner.
  • Guess the number of: tennis balls in the hopper, ping pong balls in the container, pieces of candy in the jar
  • Trivia Contest
